Driver Shot Dead on 10th Avenue Cycleway

By RA - Posted on 27 January 2010

Vancouver notched up its second reported homicide of 2010, on the busy 10th Avenue bike path between Clarke and Commercial Drive. The CBC is reporting that an Asian male in his early 20s was shot in the torso shortly after 1pm and then crashed into a white commercial van. He was rushed to hospital, where he died a short time later.

Police haven't said whether anyone on this busy cycleroute was injured and who the victim was. It sounds like he was another casualty in Vancouver's ongoing gang warfare which claimed so many lives last year.

It's disconcerting that another shooting has taken place so close to home, especially given that there is a primary school right there at Clarke and 10th. I ride that route at least every second day of the week. It's the main East-West cycling route. A good way of navigating past the heavy truck traffic around Clarke that emanates from the port. It's also normally a fairly tranquil ride along a quiet, leafy residential street. Not so tranquil, it would appear, after all.
