A Planet of Hockey Sticks

There's a good opinion piece in The Tyee by Michael McGonigle, in which he argues that Copenhagen must fail "if we are to win the fight against global warming".

Looks like he might get his wish, although there's still a chance that his worst fear might be realised: a weak climate change agreement that acts like a major obstacle to change. I haven't heard that many advocates making the connection between climate change and the general ill health of the environment, although it's pretty plain to see.

It's almost like they fear it will weaken their case in the public arena when facing the baying dogs from the climate denial industry.

McGonigle has no such fear. He says tackling climate change and improving the broader environmental conditions requires Copenhagen participants to have a "full-blown eco-conversion"

Most striking, McGonigle references Washington environmental bureaucrat Gus Speth's "The Bridge at the Edge of the World: Capitalism, the Environment, and Crossing from Crisis to Sustainability" with its series of hockey stick charts.

"Together, these graphs -- all hockey sticks -- provide a single message. We are killing the earth in every way imaginable, getting rich in the process, and providing a model for a growing world population to join in on."
