Trans-Canada Train vs Plane

Given the fact that flying is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions you'd think that there'd be more of an incentive for the average Joe to go by what is generally accepted as the more eco-friendly mode of transport, the train.

Canada Line - 3 Years Ago

Three images of the Canada line taken in April 2008 - just under three years ago. This is the junction at 10th cycle route and Cambie.

Spanish Banks Today

Today, A. and I took the bike on the B-line from Commercial Drive to UBC campus and biked the seaside route back. It's one of my favourite Vancouver rides, and today was a gorgeous sunny day for it. If it wasn't for the biting North-Westerly breeze it would felt like a Summer's day. Lots of other people had the same idea - the route was busy for a winter's day.

Two Thumbs Up For Vancouver's Separated Bike Lanes

Yesterday, I dropped by the public consultation on the Hornby Street separated bike lanes. I have to say I'm very impressed by City Hall taking the initiative here, especially as this is the busy downtown core and there's obviously many variables to work with.

I've only ridden on the newish Dunsmuir separate bike lanes a handful of times (they officially opened on 15 June), but found the experience wonderful.

Burrard Bridge Bike Lanes Clock 1 Million Riders A Year

Just as the City approves funding to upgrade the Burrard Bridge and make the separated bike lane a permanent feature, a million cyclists have been recorded crossing the bridge. The millionth crossed just after 10 pm Wednesday evening.

Vancouver Co-operative Auto Network Stiffens Penalties for Lateness

Even with a baby I find most of the time we can get by without a car in Vancouver. We're pretty well served by public transit. I can leave the front door and within a couple of minutes be at a bus stop which can whisk me off to another part of the city. Okay, "whisk" sounds a little too glamorous - most of the time you are usually hanging around at a bus stop for a while, before being loaded into a packed bus and deposited at another bus stop to connect to another bus that will get you close to where you want to go. If you're lucky you might get a seat on one of those buses. But, for us, it's fine for short trips.

Warren Buffett Takes Ownership of Mainline Vancouver Railway

Warren Buffett likes trains. No, he really likes trains. The World's Greatest Living Investor just bought out Burlington Northern Santa Fe with stock from his company Berkshire Hathaway in the biggest deal of his life. The deal cost $44 billion. Burlington Northern Santa Fe owns the 50km track, used mainly by freight but also the Amtrak passenger rail service, between Vancouver and the States.

Translink To Raise Cost of Local Travel

Transit and driving will get more expensive next year. Metro Vancouver mayors approved Translink's plan to raise fares after the 2010 Olympics on FareSaver tickets and monthly passes, and also to increase gas and parking taxes.

Slow Train Coming: Vancouver's Passenger Rail Service

After a long delay, a second daily Amtrak Cascades train, running between Portland and Vancouver, is coming into operation in August. This article appeared in the Vancouver Courier in October 2008

Amtrak's Coast Starlight Express is a full day from Vancouver when I turn in for the night. I watch the angular shadows of cranes and yard lights of Martinez, in the north of California's Bay Area, slip into the darkness behind us. Then I roll onto my bunk and fall sleep to the rhythmic rocking of the train.
