Champagne Powder in the City

La Nina has hit with a vengeance the last few days with temperatures plummeting to minus 8C here in Vancouver. After a few flurries, today the snow has begun to lie on the ground. It's already a few inches deep. It's not the usual wet, white porridge that we typically get. This stuff is dry, and finely grained. The kind of snow that skiers dream about.

Now why didn't we get this kind of snow a year ago? Might have saved us a heap of money in trucking snow in from the interior for the 2010 Olympics.

Pea Souper

Vancouver is fading in a dense, sea fog. As I cycle back along the waterfront tonight, the only sign that there is life on the other side of the water are the fuzzy, dull yellow lights through the mist of smudged-out high rises. I'm used to having the waterfront to myself at this time of night, at this time of year. Tonight the only other signs of life is a punk walking his pug, a couple of photographers setting up equipment under the bridge, and excited screams and voices bouncing across the water from a party boat on the other shore. The night is eerie, in a beautiful way.

White Christmas: Shovelling Out and Digging It

The heaps of snow that we've had in Vancouver are turning to slush and puddles. Many of the sidewalks are covered in a hard, grey, slippery pack. Rain has returned. This is why we don't like snow.

Feels Like Hibernation

It snowed all day today. The nights are drawing in. There is no government in Canada, it has been prorogued. The Canadian stockmarket shut down due to a technical problem.
