$167 Fine for Using Cellphone While Driving

Starting this Monday, drivers who are caught using a cell phone while driving in B.C. can get a $167 fine, and those found texting or emailing will also net three penalty points.

The law against using electronic devices and driving actually came into effect at the beginning of the year but cops have given drivers a month grace period.

Solicitor General Kash Heed said in a statement: "Police have been stopping drivers throughout January to give them warnings about talking on a cellphone, and people seem to be getting the message and changing their behaviour."

"But the grace period will soon be over and drivers who don't keep their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road will now pay the price."
