Video: Vancouver 2010 Opening Ceremony Protest March

I didn't see much of the 2010 Olympics Opening ceremony on Friday, apart from a few snatches caught on the web - punk fiddler Ashley Macissac showing his virtuosity, K.D. Laing's stirring rendition of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, and lots of smiling, waving Olympians in their team uniforms.

Missed the beginning totally as I was outside BC Place stadium where it was all taking place covering the protest march.

I was surprised by the turnout - many Vancouverites who are not happy about hosting the Olympics seem to have taken the view that it's here now so just enjoy the party while it lasts.

But the Olympics have come to represent so much more than just athletic excellence and there's clearly still a large segment of the population who feel that other voices around the 2010 Olmpic games, other than the one sanctioned by the heavily centricalised and secretive VANOC, need to be represented. Even if City Hall wouldn't issue them with a licence to hold a parade on the night of the ceremony.

This 5 minute video should give you a sense of the atmosphere of the march and motivations of the protesters.

It is edited, as much as possible in chronological order, to bring the final footage down from 45 mins to a 5 mins piece.
